I was at this rally. Anyone who seriously believes it was only 70,000 people is kidding themselves. I have attended ticker tape parades in lower Manhattan with 2M+ in attendance and I can tell you without any doubt that this crowd was at least 1.5M. In fact, a DC policeman told me while I was there that his commanders told him the crowd was between 1.2M and 1.7M. But what would they know? They only need to have enough resources to control the crowd, so they wouldn’t have a decent fix on the crowd size, now would they?
The 70k number was an early, unofficial estimate from a Fire Dept official who was at Freedom Plaza, near the Washington Monument at 10am or so. He was commenting on the size of the crowd in Freedom Plaza, which is a mile from the Capitol building. And it was nearly three hours before the actual rally was scheduled to begin. The crowd was so much larger than expected, DC officials blocked off streets they had not planned to block off and they needed to have the march begin down Pennsylvania Avenue two or three hours earlier than initially planned to avoid overcongestion.
You can hold these people in disdain if you like, but one thing is undeniable. The opposition to Obama and the Democrat Agenda is reaching a critical mass and once it does, the 2010 Congressional elections will be a bloodbath for incumbent Democrats and even some Republicans who are RINOs. It is wrong to assume that politicians did not take note of this crowd. Politicians are not so stupid. The Democrats are terrified right now. Their voter fraud machine called ACORN has been rendered impotent. Fund raising has totally dried up over the summer, which is unheard of this early in a new Administration. They are being pressured by their leadership to ignore the protesters, but they know they do so at the peril of losing their seat in 2010 and making the wrong move will make that a certainty.
Obama is driving the Democrat Party over a cliff. You guys would be better off if you can the smug attitude toward the people in Washington on 9/12 and try to think critically about the legitimate reasons why wheelchair bound old ladies traveled for 3 days by bus to attend that gathering.
Make up whatever you want about there being 96 trillion teabaggers slapping their sacks of tea on each others’ faces, but the fact is it was a tiny group of 70,000 fringe crazies that did nothing but get laughed at.
AJC, I’m not a Democrat and all the photo’s show the same number of people “all” day. That is, the photo’s of THAT day. We all know the rally organizers tried to use the images of the million man march from the 90′s. (which also did not reach a million) The crowd never got any larger, you were just drowning in the Rally Koolaid which is easy to do for 1st time protesters. Obama’s field agents have excellent images of you and your komrads and the new facial recognition software will root you all out and all your stored raman will be confiscated soon.
Where either of you geniuses there? My guess is no. Listen, I am all about the truth. I represent no one but myself. The crowd was between 1.2 and 1.7M. I witnessed it myself. The people there were not fringe crazies. There were entire families from great grandparents down to their great grandchildren. Old and young. A couple dozen friends of mine who I grew up with in the Bronx also went. Most voted for Obama. Almost all of them registered Democrats and a half dozen or so of them were black. A very mixed group, ethnically.
The mood of the protesters was festive and not angry at all. Make no mistake. They were there because they were upset at the government, but that wasn’t the mood of the crowd as you walked through it. I walked all through the area between The Capitol and the Washington Monument. The scope of the crowd, the area they covered was enormous. I would say about a half mile wide and a mile long. There were very few, but some counter protesters who were not harassed or intimidated, but I did see one counter protester try to provoke a group into an altercation, but nothing came of it. There was not a single arrest. Do these sound like crazy people to you?
